Some Great Portraits Using Flash

By Andrew Mason

A selection of excellent photos by Jay Wilson, taken on our Flash Photography Workshop.

Portrait with bounce flash

An indoors portrait using bounce flash in TTL mode and camera in aperture priority. A nice soft light with no harsh shadows, well exposed, and no shadow on the background. Looks great in sepia.

Portrait with on camera flash

A portrait taken outside with our model in the shade, using on camera, direct flash. Both camera and flash in manual mode. Camera set to overexpose the background. Without the flash our model would be underexposed. Just enough flash added manually to light her face well. We have a shadow under the chin which we could have lifted with a reflector. But that’s nit-picking.

Portrait with flash. umbrella and reflector

The main light here is a flash on a light stand, fired into an umbrella, and we used a silver reflector to lift the shadows. Perfectly lit. A very professional looking shot.

Off camera flash portrait

And finally, a shot which works very well with its hazy, summer, retro post production. A nice pose and taken from a good angle. Lighting was a single off camera flash above and left of the photographer, which has just given us enough light to really lift the portrait.
