Centre Weighted Metering

By Andrew Mason

Fundamentals of Photography Course Controlling Exposure Centre Weighted Metering

When selecting centre weighted metering, the camera prioritises the centre portion of the scene and
ensures that part of the frame is correctly exposed. This is useful when your subject occupies the middle of your photo, and you are not interested in the outer areas of the scene.

The portion of the scene in your viewfinder that is assessed by the light meter occupies the certre part of the frame, like this:

centre

It is a useful metering mode to use when you are placing your subject in the middle of the frame, and when the outer parts of the image, such as the background, are less important, like in this example:

DOF-1-11

You might find that using centre weighted metering when taking photos of people, flowers or objects works well.
