On this crash course you will learn the fundamental things you need to know on your camera so you can get the most out of it, and we’ll show you to compose good photos. It’s perfect if you want to quickly gain skills which will instantly improve your photos.
The Intro to Photography Course is suitable for people who have a DSLR camera or any type of camera with manual (M) mode.
The aim of the course is to get you off auto mode and using the other modes on your camera, so you have more control over your pictures.
You will learn:
- How and why to use the different modes on your camera, including aperture priority, shutter priority and manual mode
- Aperture – what is is and how it affects the photo
- Shutter speed – why it’s important and what it doe
- ISO – the principles of ISO and how to use it
- Exposure – you’ll learn what this fundamental principle is and why it’s imortant
- Metering modes and how to use them
- Techniques for composing good and interesting photos. You’ll leave the course with a framework you can apply in many situations
- Basics of white balance
- Autifocus modes and how to use the various options
- How different lenses can be used
The course starts with a concise presentation which clearly explains the basic principles of photography and where we make sure you are comfortable finding all of your camera settings.
We then set of to explore the Southbank where you will undertake a series of fun but educational exercises which will help you understand all of the principles you’re learning and give you plenty of time to practice your skills under the guidance of your tutor.
The course duration is 4 hours and has a maximum ratio of 7 attendees. At the end of the course you’ll be comfortable using manual mode to take photos, and you’ll know how to compose interesting and rewarding images.

- How to freeze action or blur motion
- The best way to take photos of people
- Techniques to stop you taking fuzzy images when it’s dark
- Composition principles such as the rule of thirds which will improve you photos of landscapes amongst other things
